Krista Freece, PhD, ABN

Dr. Krista Freece earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, with a concentration in Neuropsychology from Fielding Graduate University. She completed an APA-approved internship at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego and her postdoctoral work in Michigan. Dr. Freece’s postdoctoral work emphasized neuropsychological evaluation and rehabilitation of traumatic brain injury in children, adolescents, and adults. She has been licensed as a psychologist in Michigan since 2012 and California since 2015. She earned board certification by the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology in 2015.

Dr. Freece returned to Kaiser Permanente in San Diego as a Board Certified Neuropsychologist in 2016 and her clinical work focuses on neuropsychological assessment across the lifespan. Her work has expanded to include the assessment of neurodevelopmental conditions and a variety of neurocognitive disorders. From 2016 to 2025, Dr. Freece supervised trainees in the APA-accredited internship program at Kaiser Permanente, San Diego, developing a neuropsychological elective. Dr. Freece’s clinical training in psychotherapy includes experience in Prolonged Exposure and Cognitive Processing Therapy for treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

Dr. Freece’s forensic practice includes personal injury, disability, workers compensation, catastrophic injury, violent act, medical malpractice, environmental toxin and family court evaluations. She has been retained as both plaintiff and defense expert in Michigan and California. She has been a Qualified Medical Evaluator (QMEs) in California since 2018. Dr. Freece is an engaging presenter on a wide range issues, including audiences of brain injury professionals, psychologists, neuropsychologists, QMEs, and attorneys.

Dr. Freece has held many leadership roles in providing service and advocacy to the fields of psychology and neuropsychology. In the realm of mentorship/sponsorship, she served APA Division 40 as the Early Career Psychologist Mentor for California from 2019 to 2021. In training domain, she has served as a Commission on Accreditation (COA) Site Visitor and Chair since 2017 and as a commissioner since January, 2025. Within the field of neuropsychology, Dr. Freece has taken an active role in the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology (ABN). She initially began her service as a Work Sample reviewer, then participated in the development of a new multiple-choice exam and work sample rubric. Her responsibilities grew to include training new work sample examiners, then serving as a Member at Large on the Board of Directors for two years and Exam Chair for two and a half years, during which time she led the transition to virtual multiple choice and oral exam administration in response to creating a pathway to boarding during COVID. Her passion for training and neuropsychology were fused in her role as a Delegate to the Minnesota Conference to Update Education and Training Guidelines in Clinical Neuropsychology in September, 2022, resulting in two seminal publications in neuropsychological training. She is currently the Past President of ABN and has seats representing that organization on the Clinical Neuropsychology Specialty Council and the NA6. She has been honored with awards from ABN in 2023 and 2025 and Fellow status with the National Academy of Neuropsychology in 2025.
