Takeo Toyoshima, MD

Dr. Toyoshima is a general, addiction, and forensic psychiatrist practicing in the San Francisco Bay Area. He received his B.S. from Yale and his M.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles. He completed his psychiatry residency, addiction psychiatry fellowship, and forensic psychiatry fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. He is board-certified in adult psychiatry and board-eligible in addiction and forensic psychiatry.

Dr. Toyoshima currently works as a general and addiction psychiatrist at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where he directly treats veterans as well as supervises physicians and other healthcare professionals in training. As a UCSF clinical faculty, he routinely mentors and teaches medical students, residents and fellows. In his private practice, he specializes in treating substance use disorders (i.e., addictions) and dual diagnosis cases (i.e., the intersection of psychiatric disorders and substance use disorders) in addition to serving the state’s Japanese-speaking patient population. He has practiced medicine at various outpatient, inpatient and emergency clinical settings, and continues to treat patients at the San Francisco County Jail, San Francisco General Hospital’s Psychiatric Emergency Services, and Alta Bates Summit Medical Center’s inpatient psychiatry unit.

Dr. Toyoshima’s areas of expertise include substance use disorders, dual diagnoses and substance-induced conditions such as stimulant-induced psychotic disorders, and he has been an invited speaker at conferences and grand rounds on such topics. He has been qualified as a psychiatric expert in several Bay Area counties and in hearings for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. He is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, and the California Society of Addiction Medicine. He serves as the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry’s Area Co-director for the states of California, Alaska, and Hawaii.
