Sumedha Purkayastha, MD

Dr. Sumedha Purkayastha received her medical degree from Lady Hardinge Medical College in New Delhi, India. She completed her psychiatric residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (Elmhurst Hospital) and her child and adolescent training at Tulane University, where she served as Chief Fellow. She completed her Forensic Psychiatry fellowship at Harvard University’s Massachusetts General-Brigham Hospital. She is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Psychiatry with certification in the subspecialty of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Dr. Purkayastha specializes in the treatment of children and adolescents with anxiety, depression, oppositional defiant disorder, autism, trauma, and ADHD. She also works with adults suffering from, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorders, psychosis and personality disorders. She has sought out additional training in PCIT, DBT, PTSD therapy for children, Coping Cat for Anxiety for children and adolescents, and Psychiatric Management of Borderline Personality Disorder. She also participated in the Global Mental Health Program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, offering mental health services to underserved populations in India. She has provided psychiatric care at various levels including correctional, emergency, inpatient and outpatient psychiatry. She previously held the position of Supervising Psychiatry at Rikers Island, providing psychiatric care as well as supervising a team of psychiatric providers at New York’s largest correctional facility. Recently, she switched roles to provide inpatient psychiatric services at Elmhurst Hospital Center in Queens, New York. Simultaneously, she also provides outpatient care to children, adolescents as well as adults at The Ross Center, New York, as well as telehealth after hours coverage for Samaritan Hospital in Watertown, New York.

Dr. Purkayastha is a member of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (AAPL).

Dr. Purkayastha’s areas of interest include school threat assessments, competency evaluations, malpractice and injury claims, guardianship assessments, civil and criminal competencies, criminal responsibility and child custody evaluations.

Dr. Purkayastha has been an independent contractor to fpamed since 2025.
